A Decision Framework for Systems of Systems Based on Operational Effectiveness
Mrs. Bonnie W. Young, Naval Postgraduate School
The ultimate goal of creating a system of systems (SoS) is to enable emergent behavior that enhances operational effectiveness. This emergent behavior can be characterized as SoS-level behavior (or force-level behavior in the case of a battle force SoS (BF SoS)) and is considered “emergent” based on its being greater (or providing more effectiveness) than the sum of its parts (the additive effectiveness of the constituent systems if they were each operating independently). Thus, the measurement of the SoS’ overall effectiveness is not merely the sum of the measures of effectiveness of each participating system. The SoS’ measure of effectiveness is based on a more complicated calculation that is dependent on the operational situation and the levels of effectiveness of particular attributes of the SoS’s constituent systems. The importance of determining and understanding SoS measures of effectiveness is that this knowledge is key to the decision framework for engineering successful systems of systems.
Certification Training International (CTI) will offer a CSEP (Certified Systems Engineering Professional) Preparation 4-Day Course focused on preparing you to successfully sit the CSEP examination conducted by INCOSE. This course will be delivered by Dave Mason, INCOSE Assistant Director, Student Division and Past President of the INCOSE San Francisco Bay Area Chapter.
The course will be offered at Oxford Hotel in Denver, CO on May 12-15, 2014. Please see the CTI CSEP Preparation Course website for further information and registration.
DENVER - The Colorado State University System is pleased to announce a new educational partnership with CH2M HILL, a global leader in full-service engineering. Through the CSU Denver South initiative, CH2M HILL will host two graduate-level courses that are part of a systems engineering program offered by the CSU College of Engineering. The four-course program – two classes taught face-to-face on CH2M HILL’s Englewood campus and two classes available online – covers the core curriculum needed for completion of a master’s or Ph.D. in systems engineering from CSU in Fort Collins. Classes begin January 2014 and are open to all qualified professionals in aerospace, energy, environment, biosciences, cyber/software, or related sectors who are seeking to expand their career horizons.
